Dress x Trap

JL

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

– Lao Tzu

1. Tongue and Jaw Position

/ɛ/ (DRESS): Mid-front vowel Tongue is mid and slightly front, lips relaxed Jaw is slightly open /æ/ (TRAP): Open-front vowel Tongue is lower and further forward than for /ɛ/ Jaw is more open — noticeably wider mouth opening Tip: If students open their mouth wider and drop the jaw more, they’re likely producing /æ/ rather than /ɛ/.

2. Length and Quality

/ɛ/ is short and quite tense but without off-glide. /æ/ is also short in RP, but lower and “brighter” sounding, with a more open quality. /æ/ may sound a little longer in some accents (e.g. American English), but in RP both are short vowels.

3. Common Spellings

/ɛ/ often appears in: e → pen, bed, send ea → head, breath ai (irregular) → said /æ/ usually appears in: a → cat, man, back, stamp Note: English spelling can be unreliable — drilling with sound rather than spelling is best.

4. Acoustic and Auditory Difference

/ɛ/ sounds mid and flat, like in pen. /æ/ sounds brighter, more open and sharper, like in cat. Native speakers often hear /æ/ as “wider” or “lower”. Minimal pairs to train the ear: pen /pɛn/ vs pan /pæn/ bed /bɛd/ vs bad /bæd/ men /mɛn/ vs man /mæn/

  9. set /sɛt/sat /sæt/

DRESS X TRAP - Dialogue Practice

  1. Emma: Jack, have you packed your jacket yet?
  2. Jack: Not yet. I’m still looking for my black bag.
  3. Emma: You’d better check the bedroom. You always leave it next to the desk.
  4. Jack: Oh yes, there it is! My map is in there as well.
  5. Emma: Perfect. Don’t forget the snacks. I got some crackers and cheddar.
  6. Jack: Great idea. I’ve got a packet of crisps.
  7. Emma: Excellent. Are we taking the tram or the metro?
  8. Jack: Probably the tram — it’s faster and less of a trek.
  9. Emma: Good plan. We’ll get there by ten, so we can grab a sandwich before the train.
  10. Jack: Sounds good. I’ll get my jacket on and meet you at the entrance.

Target Sounds: DRESS /e/: check, desk, bed, cheddar, get, ten, entrance, metro, trek, better. TRAP /æ/: Jack, packed, jacket, black, bag, map, snacks, crackers, tram, sandwich.
